Many of you shared in my sadness on Instagram when I announced I was (once again) quitting coffee. This did not come without much hesitation and grieving over my once favorite morning beverage. Over the last few years, my gut has become increasingly sensitive to coffee and causes me unwanted pain and inflammation, especially during an Ulcerative Colitis flare up. At wit’s end and desperate to heal my body, I decided to kick it once and for all.
Now that coffee is no longer my morning staple, I still find myself longing for the comfort of a hot mug full of goodness in the morning and have searched high and low for possible alternatives to my cup of joe.
Here are 3 alternatives that I love:
This beautifully green and frothy coffee alternative will always hold a place in my heart. When I was bummed about giving up coffee, I discovered having a hot cup of matcha in the morning did the trick. While it tastes nothing like coffee, it is delicious in its own right. You can add all kinds of beneficial supplements to your matcha latte as well. I switch mine up, but generally I like to include collagen powder, l-glutamine, and sometimes Lion’s Mane or cordyceps powder if I need an extra boost.
The flavor is that of a strong green tea with an earthier tone than its hot tea counterpart. You can sweeten it by adding a small amount of honey.
My favorite brands:
FourSigmatic Mushroom Matcha
Mighty Leaf Matcha Tea
2. Crio Bru
This was an interesting alternative for me, one that I would've never considered had it not been recommended to me. Crio Bru is made from 100% cocoa beans. They have 3 different types available (at least at the time of my writing this): Ghana, Dominican Republic, and Ecuador. For this, I tried the Ghana blend.
The flavor is quite delightful! It reminds me of an unsweetened hot cocoa, especially when I added almond milk to it, making it creamier. As a final touch, I decided to add a splash of cinnamon to complement the cocoa flavor, which added a little something extra to the palette.
Organic cocoa beans are an amazing superfood that provide many health benefits, including boosting the immune system, promoting weight loss, and supporting brain health.
This caffeine-free blend was an interesting collection of herbs mixed together to create a wide range of flavors in one cup. The ingredients include carob, barley, chicory root, dates, figs, and almonds.
The flavor seemed to meet at a pleasant intersection of a spicy tea and coffee, not registering with me as being more one than the other. I added frothed almond milk to make it a bit creamier, which I really enjoyed.
This option is fully caffeine free, so you can enjoy this in the morning or in the evening without the worries of staying awake at night.
This is not an exhaustive list of options- there are so many more fun alternatives to try! What are YOUR favorite coffee substitutes?
